According to scientists, chocolate may provide relief to those people suffering from a tenacious cough. As per Professor Alyn Morice, who is the head of cardiovascular and respiratory studies at the University of Hull, found that chocolate is truly a more efficient method for reducing a tickle (or a hacking cough) rather than any other over-the-counter drugs.
In one of the recent studies, it was found that the patients who took a new medicine comprising of cocoa (versus cough syrup) noted a significant change in their cough within two days of time.

Previous research which was conducted at the National Heart and Lung Institute in the UK revealed that the cocoa ingredient known as theobromine was even more efficient than the generally used drug known as Codeine, in preventing the action of the sensory nerves that pushes the cough reflex.

The texture of the chocolate is stickier than the regular cough medicines, which implies that it’s better implemented to coat your throat and thus protect the nerve endings that trigger the sensation of coughing.

Professor Alyn Morice, who is the head of the Hull Cough Clinic says that having a bar of dark chocolate every day (which has raised levels of theobromine) may also be useful for people with diagnosed persistent cough.
However, more research is needed to be done regarding the theory.
